Welfare Committee

The Welfare Committee Relief form is available HERE.

When a council finds that one of their Brother Knights is sick or in distress, the council, if it a member of the Bergen Chapter, can submit the Brother’s name to the Chapter through the Chapter’s Welfare Committee (Committee). When the Committee is presented with cases from member councils (in good standing), the Committee treats each individual case with an open mind and with confidentiality.

The Committee assigns each case a unique number and reviews each case against its standards. If the case is deemed worthy of support, the Committee will recommend that financial support, in an amount up to $250.00, be given.

Only the Committee members know the true identity of the Brother in distress and will not divulge that Brother’s identity.

When a case is presented at a Chapter meeting, it is presented as Case Number “N” from Council “X” and what the Brother’s ailment is.

A case can be presented two additional times within one year of its initial presentation to the Committee. This allows the Brother Knight to receive a maximum of $750.00 within one year.

For example, if a council presents a new case to the Chapter on April 20, then the Brother in distress can receive assistance three times between April 20 of this year and April 19 of next year.

After the council makes the third presentation to the Committee within the one year period, the case can be renewed again after its anniversary date, allowing the Brother Knight to receive additional support, up to the maximum of $750.00, for the next year. Cases can be brought up three consecutive times, or spread out during the year, depending on how the council feels their Brother Knight can best be assisted.

Even though the Chapter does not meet during July and August, that does not mean that a Brother Knight in distress cannot receive assistance.

A council need only contact a Chapter officer and the Chapter will get the Brother the assistance he needs.

On occasion, the Chapter has made “Special Cases”, to help during a local or national crisis.  The Chapter has helped Brothers in other areas of New Jersey and made donations to the Archdiocesan Pride in Our Priests Dinner.
